History of Coburg High School

Coburg High School began as Coburg Higher Elementary School, the first of its type in Victoria, which opened in 1911 and was situated in the Coburg Primary School. When the original Coburg High School building was completed in 1916 the pupils simply transferred across Bell Street to the new building which was 'L' shaped, extending across the front on     Bell Street and down the east side forming an open area facing out to the south-west.

By 1926 the school had expanded sufficiently for plans to be made to enlarge the building forming a fully enclosed quadrangle. The modern frontage, as most ex-students know the school, was added in the 1930's and the three story building at the rear in the
1960's

Farewell Coburg High
The school continued in Bell Street until 1993 when it was merged with Preston Technical School and East Coburg Primary School to form the City of Moreland College. The new College was located on the site of the former RMIT and Coburg Teachers College campus, where it operated until 2004. The buildings which so many of us associated with Coburg High School were abandoned and, after a sad period of dereliction, were demolished.

Coburg High School Reborn

In 2007, a new School, known as Coburg Senior High School, opened in refurbished buildings on the College site.
It catered for Years 10 to 12 only, and offered an innovative curriculum with up-to-date methods of delivery.
In many ways, this new School was the inheritor of the Coburg High School tradition.
The beginning of the  school year in 2015 saw a new phase in the 'rebirth' of Coburg High School when year 7 commenced at the Senior school site.
On Sunday the 23rd of October 2016 we celebrated the centenary of our much loved school.
This was held at the new site, enabling us to view the new buildings and celebrate the rise of Coburg High School  from the ashes. Perhaps not as we remember it, but as a fully functioning year 7 to 12 educational institution again.
See photos of this event under reunions on this site

An Historical Imperative
Coburg High School played a very important part in the history of Coburg and surrounding areas and it is imperative that the history of the school be preserved. We are currently working to ensure that when the old Bell St site is redeveloped, in whatever format, an area is set aside to act as a memorial to our fine old school.

Our Mission Statement
