DECEMBER 2021 NEWSLETTER
Hello to all in this new, post covid lock-down world. Where we go from here is anyone's guess, but with luck we will all get to celebrate Christmas and New Year with our families and friends.
On a sad note we have lost one of our Notable Students. Colonel George MacKenzie OBE, RFD, a long time Governor of Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance has sadly passed away.
We also note the passing of June Henshall, wife of one of the founders of the CHS Historical Group, the late Bruce Henshall. June [Bowen] was a year behind Bruce at CHS and that's where they met.
Another alumnus of the same era, Dr Tom Acheson, who was honoured with an OAM for his services to medicine and the community in 2009, has also passed away. We offer our condolences and best wishes to their families and friends.
The Historical group would like to acknowledge the contribution of John Bold who has served as our chairman for the last five years. Following the recent passing of his beloved wife, Jen, John has decided to step down from the group to enable him to spend more time with his extended family. We thank him for his outstanding service and wish him well for the future. He will be sorely missed.
As we say farewell to John, we are pleased to welcome Murray McInnis to the group. He was a student at CHS from 1965 to 69 and has enjoyed considerable success as a Barrister and Federal Court Magistrate. He will be a valuable acquisition to our team
Covid restrictions have disrupted many of the regular re-unions held by the various year levels. One of these is the Class of 1950 who have met for many years for an annual luncheon in Doncaster. This year's event was postponed [details on our website] and is scheduled for the 25th of February. If any other groups wish to advertise changes or find old friends from their school days, we are happy to include information in these email newsletters.
The latest edition of Australian Geographic included an article about the evolution of school social events over the years. It was headlined by this photo, taken by well known photographer, the late Rennie Ellis. It is said to be of "The 1977 Coburg High School graduation ball" Why he was there and who the students were is a mystery.
If you were at CHS in the seventies and can shed some light on this, we would love to hear the story. Maybe you were in the photo or recognise one of your friends.

We have no new information about the future of the Bell St site but ex-student and local resident, John Sachinidis, managed to retrieve the school bell and signage from the site some time after demolition. More about that in the next newsletter but in the meantime go to our website and have a look at his remarkable piece describing the demolition. www.coburghighhistorical.org. Scroll down the Home page to the button "The Old Bell St Site".
