JUNE 2020 EMAIL UPDATE

Greetings to you all as the middle of the year approaches and we begin to wind back the Covid-19 restrictions.
It is with regret that we note that one of our most famous 'Notable students'  died recently. Former Wimbledon Champion, Ashley Cooper, is fondly remembered as not only a great tennis player, but a very popular and friendly student who captained Green House and was elected as one of the two prefects chosen from form five and continued as a prefect in form six. He was a student at Coburg High School from 1948 to 1953. See Notable Students on our website.  coburghighhistorical.org
Another of our sporting Notable Students, Ian Huntington, remembers being beaten, when he was in form six, by Ashley who was in form two at the time, for the CHS Tennis Championship. Ashley was a very handsome young man and was a heartthrob for the girls at school. He married Helen Wood, a former Miss Australia and it was reported that several thousand turned out for their Wedding.

Vale Peter Rich:
A well respected former Principal of the old Coburg High School has sadly passed away. Peter Rich was Principal from 1984  to 1989 and will be remembered fondly by the students of that era. Peter is pictured here at the 2016 Centenary with current Principal of the new Coburg High School, Stewart Milner.

It's pleasing to see that the new school has embraced the history and culture of the original Coburg High School. Principle, Stewart Milner, has included references to both Ashley Cooper and Peter Rich in his latest school newsletter.
These newsletters make very interesting reading and show that the new school is indeed a worthy successor to the school we all remember. Use this link to access them.https://www.coburg.vic.edu.au/news/

Brian Warren – Swimming Trophies
Late in 2019, our Group was contacted about some swimming trophies that had been found by a householder. They had been awarded to Brian Warren during his time at Coburg High School in the late 1940s early 1950s. Brian won many diving trophies including Australian Junior and Victorian Intermediate championships.
They are currently in our room at the school but we would like to return them to Brian or his family. Unfortunately, we do not have any contact details for him in our records.
If you can help, please email details on [email protected]

Keep safe and keep in touch and if anyone has some spare time we would welcome you into our Historical Group.
Help keep the memory of our old school alive.
