H. P. BENNETT CENTRE

In 1996 when Coburg High School closed at the Bell St site, Don Lugg and Rex Harcourt, from the 1937 stream, took the first steps to ensure that important memorabilia and records were not lost in the relocation to the Alma St Campus. They obtained a $500 grant from Coburg City Council on the condition that they liaise with the Coburg Historical Society.

Among the items saved was the original honour board which was destined to go to land-fill. It has now been restored and is proudly displayed at the new school, along with donated items such as trophies and  school uniform from the early years. In excess of  600 class photos were saved and are now displayed on our website.
In February 1997 they reported to their class reunion [1937-1941] and a steering committee was formed. Space was allocated by the newly amalgamated schools to house and display the material and was given the name H.P.Bennett Centre after a well respected and long serving Head Master at C.H.S.
Rex Harcourt was the first Convenor, followed by Ted Jackson, Dr Ern Eldred, Bruce Henshall, Ron Ginger and Don Trewella as Chairman.
In 2000 the group adopted the name "Moreland City College Historical Group to represent all the amalgamated schools
Now with the redevelopment of the site and the opening of the new Coburg High School, the group has become the Coburg High School Historical Group Inc.
As time has passed, new members have joined this group and with the aid of grants have catalogued the memorabilia, created this website  and worked to preserve the history of those Coburg Schools.
Most of the founding members have passed away but we will never forget the debt we owe them for the work they did to preserve our precious memories.
