IAN BAILEY
Ian was at CHS from 1953-58 and, by his own admission, was not the most diligent or conscientious student being regularly invited to the headmaster’s office.
After graduating in optometry at the University of Melbourne, he married Valerie Robertson (CHS
1953-56) and then gradually made a transition from private practice to academic optometry.
Ian became an international authority on rehabilitation of the visually impaired and is best known for
designing the LogMAR chart which is now the ‘gold standard’ for measuring visual acuity.
He had a 40-year career as a Professor at the University of California, Berkeley and has received
numerous awards recognizing his contributions to vision science, optometry and vision rehabilitation.
