JACK EMMINS
Jack attended Moreland Primary, Moreland Central School, Coburg High School and University High School.
He commenced as an apprentice at Victorian Railways in 1941 and studied for two years at Victorian Railways Technical College and RMIT. This led to a scholarship and a free place at Melbourne University by the Railways.
In order to obtain this scholarship, Jack was required to sign a bond to remain with the railways for seven years, so upon graduation as a Bachelor of Civil Engineering he took up a position in the Railways Engineering Department.
Jack continued in the Railways until retirement in 1983, by which time he was the Chief Civil Engineer responsible for all civil engineering works, including design, construction and maintenance of bridges, buildings, civil works and all rail tracks throughout Victoria. He headed a staff of over 3000 and was responsible for a budget of approximately
$200 Million per annum.[in 1983]
Following retirement from the Railways, Jack worked with a firm of Consulting Engineers as an Advisor and Consultant. He became involved with Neighbourhood Watch for over 12 years being Area Manager, Regional Manager and Committee member of the District Council. An interest in computers lead to him becoming a member of a computer user group and leader of special interest group of retirees and others [AUSOM]
Jack is an active member of the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron, participating in various activities including navigational rallies, cruising and fishing.
Jack maintained his links with Coburg High School and along with former class mates from the 1937 stream, Bruce Henshall, Rex Harcourt and Don Lugg, was a prime mover in the establishment of the Historical Group and it’s efforts to collect and maintain the history and memorabilia of the original school.
